Research Field Structural Mechanics

The mechanical properties of a drive train and the machine structure have a decisive impact on the bandwidths of the control loops and thus on the realizable dynamics of the motion axes. Structural mechanical properties have a significant influence on the achievable position and path accuracy thereby.

Structural mechanical models
Models of the mechanical subsystem of a machine are a prerequisite for simulating and analyzing the overall behavior of a motion control system. Furthermore, they play a key role for systematic enhancements of the overall dynamical behavior. In addition, structural-mechanical models enable the parameterization of the motion control system to reduce weakly damped mechanical oscillations to a minimum.
Experimental validation
Experimental investigations are essential to verify simulation models. The vibrational excitation is done using a shaker, an impulse hammer or the motor current. The resulting oscillations are recorded using triaxial accelerometers or a 3D laser scanning vibrometer and then evaluated using special analysis software.
