Language Tandem & International Buddy Programme

The language tandem consists of two people with different native languages, e.g. German-English, Spanish-German, German-Hindi, etc. and offers the opportunity to gain speaking practice and cultural insights in direct communication with a native.

• International Buddy Programme ➡️ Intercultural competence

The International Buddy Programme connects local and international students who want to learn more about their buddy's culture and promotes intercultural competence.

• Aims

We offer two programmes - the Language Tandem to improve language skills and the International Buddy Programme promoting intercultural and social competence. Both programmes are based on the principle of learning by doing - action-oriented acquisition of communicative competence with peers.

Here are the guidelines for the language tandem and the International Buddy Programme. 

Do you want to have the Language Tandem or the International Buddy Programme recognized for the certificate Intercultural Competence+?

The following is required:

• 8 or more out of 10 meetings and
• Reflection report

according to the guidelines.

We welcome people whose focus is on learning languages and cultural competence.

Therefore, we are strictly against any kind of discrimination, bullying, spam, exhibitionism or obscenity. As it is not possible for us to monitor these behaviours, please report misconduct directly to us. These types of behaviour are unacceptable and will result in expulsion from the Language Tandem / International Buddy Programme.

Respect is one of the foundations of a successful language tandem / buddy programme. Don't forget that your tandem / buddy is not a teacher, but is also participating voluntarily. People can feel uncomfortable when their mistakes are pointed out to them. In such situations, it can be an advantage to point these out with an understanding attitude. Try to motivate each other. This can make the exchange more pleasant. It can also help to first understand the context. Prepare for the meetings, see them as an opportunity to apply what you have learnt and experience new things. A translation tool or other material can of course be taken to the meeting. Make sure that you both benefit from it. Learning is not a one-way street. You are responsible for the information you share and for your interactions. If you feel uncomfortable with your partner, don't be afraid to end the tandem / buddy programme. We act as a passive facilitator for your meetings and are therefore not liable.

The data is collected by us, forwarded to the tandem partner during the match and stored inaccessible to third parties.
