Individual consultations
I have a writing assignment but I don’t know where to start? How do I incorporate my research and the sources into my argument? Is my argument logical and coherent? How do I deal with motivation problems and writer’s block? If you are struggling with these or any other questions regarding academic writing, the Writing Center can help.
The Writing Center offers one-on-one consultations in German and English. Our trained peer-tutors can help you plan, structure, organize, draft, and revise your paper; give feedback on the structure from individual paragraphs to chapters and the complete paper; share strategies for overcoming motivation problems or writer’s block; and offer tips and support with any problems you may encounter during the writing process. The tutors assist you by asking questions and helping you find answers, not by telling you what to write.
You can come to us with your seminar paper, protocol, project or internship report, handout, or a final thesis and we will help you with the following:
- Writing plan and organization: time management, motivation, writing strategies
- Text structure and argumentation: thesis statement, research questions, outline, structure, cohesion and coherence
- Academic, scientific, and formal requirements: working with sources, citation styles
- Language and style
- Other questions concerning academic writing.
We cannot read your whole paper, but you are welcome to send us an excerpt (up to five pages) and we will provide feedback and discuss your questions based on a portion of your text. We are not experts in your field of study: questions regarding content should be directed at your advisor.
While we do not offer editing or proofreading services, we can offer feedback on language and grammar in the excerpt you sent us and give you tips that you can then implement in the rest of the text.
How do I make an appointment?
To make an appointment for a one-on-one consultation, send us an email with a short description of the project you are working on and your questions.
You can also come to our online drop-in hours without appointment.
Please be ready to share your text / document on your screen. If you would like feedback on a larger portion of the text, send us an excerpt (max 5 pages) at least 3 days in advance.
