How to read and write scientific papers (Oct 29, 2024)

In this workshop we will have a look on how scientific papers are structured, how we can select the important information and how we can distinguish a useful article from a less expedient one. We will also practice how one can coherently create sentences in scientific writing style. You are welcome to bring your own current term or thesis paper or journal article/book chapter to use it as a practical example of scientific writing. Since it is an online workshop, it may be best to have the material in an online version as well (PDF or Word-format).

Introduction to Academic Writing (Nov 15, 2024)

This interactive workshop for BA and MA students will cover key aspects of the writing process, including the structure of a research paper, crafting introductions and conclusions, and developing research questions and thesis statements. We will also explore how to compose abstracts, write effective paragraphs, and edit for clarity and cohesion. Additionally, we will briefly examine how to utilize ChatGPT and other AI writing tools to enhance the writing process.

Scientific Writing with Obsidian (Nov 21, 2024)

Obsidian is a powerful software tool for structuring and connecting information and has gained increasing popularity in recent years - particularly in academic environments. Minimalist, lightweight, and private: these are the hallmarks of Obsidian. And it's completely free of charge for personal use. In the workshop, we will focus on how to:

Create and link notes in Markdown format (don't worry, you don't need any prior knowledge of Markdown)
Build and visualize a personal knowledge network
Efficiently manage projects and tasks

Obsidian is customizable down to the smallest detail and can be expanded as desired, so we will also take a look at various plug-ins during the workshop. Among other topics, we will cover:

Version control
Organizational methods (e.g., Kanban board)
Export to various file formats
and much more!

The workshop is aimed at all students who are still looking for a good program for writing, organizing, learning, or researching :)

Academic Writing for Graduates and PhD Students (Nov 29, 2024)

This interactive workshop is all about academic writing in English: Participants will work on their active reading skills and apply them to their writing. We will take a closer look at academic style in English, direct and indirect quotes, "signposting" in academic writing, and strategies to build vocabulary. The goal of this workshop is to acquire skills to write a compelling, stylistically sound academic paper in English.

Academic Writing with LaTex (Dec 3, 2024)

This workshop teaches the basics of academic writing with LaTeX. We will focus on how to write and format academic works (e.g. bachelor theses) with LaTeX. The workshop is aimed at beginners so you will not need prior experience with LaTeX. We will focus on the following topics:

Introduction to LaTeX IDEs
Basic structure of LaTeX documents
Creating chapters
Including figures and tables
Citations and working with literature
Generating table of contents, list of figures, list of abbreviations, ...

We will work with "TeXStudio" in the workshop. If you want to work with your own local LaTeX installation please take care of that before the workshop (we will use MiKTeX). If you do not want to install LaTeX locally, you can use Overleaf (requires a free account).

Crash Course Academic Writing (Dec 13, 2024)

How is a scientific paper structured? What should I keep in mind when citing? And does it really matter where my figures are placed in the text? The first major scientific paper is often accompanied by many questions, and there are often rules and conventions of which you may not even be aware. In this short crash course, we aim to answer the most important questions about creating a scientific paper. The focus is on structure and formatting, as well as the infamous "scientific style"—and what that actually means. The workshop is particularly aimed at students seeking a brief introduction to the topic of academic writing, without too much fuss and with a few handy tips and tricks.

NOTE: The workshops work best through interaction. That is why we look forward to active participation in the tasks!

Einführung in das wissenschaftliche Schreiben, Fokus: Ingenieurwissenschaften, 29.11.2024

Der Workshop richtet sich an B.A. und M.A. Studierende der Ingenieurwissenschaften und vermittelt Grundlagen des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens und Schreibens: Themenfindung, Gliederung und Struktur, Zeitmanagement und wissenschaftlicher Stil. Auch der Einsatz von KI Schreibtools wird thematisiert. Inputs der Dozentin wechseln sich mit aktivierenden Schreibaufgaben ab, in denen die Studierenden eigene Herausforderungen, anstehende Aufgaben und Fragestellungen praktisch bearbeiten.

Wissenschaftliches Schreiben mit LaTeX, 03.06.2024

Dieser Workshop vermittelt die Grundlagen des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens mit LaTeX. Konkret lernen wir, wie man wissenschaftliche Arbeiten (z.B. Bachelorarbeiten) mit LaTeX schreibt und formatiert. Der Workshop richtet sich an Anfänger, es ist also kein Problem, wenn Du davor noch nie mit LaTeX gearbeitet hast. Folgende Punkte werden unter anderem in dem Workshop besprochen:

Kennenlernen von LaTeX-Entwicklungsumgebungen
Grundlegender Aufbau von LaTeX-Dokumenten
Anlegen von Kapiteln
Einfügen von Bildern und Tabellen
Zitieren und Quellenarbeit
Verzeichnisse: Inhaltsverzeichnis, Abbildungsverzeichnis, Abkürzungsverzeichnis etc.

Wir werden in dem Workshop mit der Entwicklungsumgebung "TeXStudio" arbeiten. Wer eine lokale LaTeX-Installation möchte, kann sich vor dem Workshop bereits darum kümmern (im Workshop wird MiKTeX verwendet). Wer bei dem Workshop mitmachen möchte, ohne sich LaTeX zu installieren, kann das zum Beispiel über Overleaf tun (erfordert einen kostenlosen Account).
