About the laboratory
MIXstudio stands for Multimedia/Integration/X-Disciplinary. The MIXstudio laboratory space, the MIXatelier workspace and the various projects, lectures and workshops held here are designed to create and nurture an integrated culture of community engaged in research and learning within the university in general and the Faculty of Interior Architecture, Architecture and Design IAD in particular.
Genesis
Founded in 2008 by Professor Linn Song, MIXstudio seeks to take a holistic view of many facets of design and to use social engagement as a pedagogical-didactic resource (so-called "service learning"). He tries to look at (interior) architecture through a lens that sees design not as a formal exercise in form and beauty, but as a process of creation centred on human needs - practical, emotional, ephemeral. What matters is not "how things look" but "what things do (to us)".
While their research interests and thus agendas within MIXstudio are diverse, Professors Sander and Song share the belief that the core of education is not in teaching/learning the technical/practical knowledge one "needs" to get a job, but rather in critical and conceptual thinking that goes beyond practical knowledge, partly due to the fact that technological standards and practices are constantly changing - and also in the belief that the theoretical is the enabler of innovation, invention and transformation.
Equipment
The MIXstudio has 4 VR glasses (Meta Quest 3) that can be reserved and used in the MIXstudio & MIXhof. They may NOT be taken out of the studio or borrowed. The specifications, instructions for use, connectivity, etc. are available on site and are continuously updated.

Projects
Every two to three years, the MIXstudio is dedicated to a new, socio-political architectural theme that has commonalities between different disciplines. Projects, elective modules, events and excursions are developed and organised around the theme, with a focus on the future.
Since 2025: ‘Belief & Faith’ | ‘Glaube’
Fact-based and belief systems are at the centre of human experience - shaping cultures, societies, personal identities and even the built environment. They provide meaning, guide behaviour and create shared frameworks to understand and navigate the world.
But if left unquestioned on the one hand or disregarded on the other, belief systems can lead to dogma, division and resistance to change.
From 2025 to 2028, MIXstudio will scrutinise the nature of faith and beliefs, their role in shaping human thought and the need to critically examine them.
