About the degree programme
The task of an architect is primarily the conceptual, creative and constructive planning and implementation of buildings. The profession of architect is in a constant state of change due to research and innovation. Therefore, experts are needed who can deal with the complex interplay of design and ecological use of resources and create living spaces for people.
The topic of sustainable building, such as constructions with biogenic materials, is moving more and more into the foreground.
In addition to classical architectural training, the focus of the architecture degree programme at the Faculty of Interior Architecture, Architecture and Design IAD is on timber construction and energy-efficient planning and building. The excellent equipment in the laboratories and workshops of the university as well as the networking of the study programmes with each other is a significant advantage for the students in the interaction of theory and practice.
Course content
At the Faculty of Interior Architecture, Architecture and Design IAD, we offer you a holistic architectural education in which the various disciplines of architecture are coordinated in project work. In this way, you can learn to understand and implement the generalised working methods of an architect. The understanding and interpretation of socio-cultural contexts go hand in hand with this.
In the basic training of the first four semesters, the study content is divided into the areas of design and building theory, urban planning, building construction, structural engineering, building physics, building technology, presentation and general scientific principles of building.
From the winter semester 2023/24, two complete modules in the Bachelor's degree programme in Architecture will be offered in English as part of the university initiative "Internationalisation".
The first module comprises the courses "Freehand Media and Communication" and "Multimedial Communication". The second module consists of "Architectural History" and "Architectural Theory and Sociology". In addition, further English-language elective modules are offered for all three degree programmes of the IAD faculty.
The English-language course offerings promote exchange with guest students from our international partner universities, support the language competence of our students, and thus contribute to intercultural mobility in a globalised working world.
After a semester of study with in-depth practical experience, we will work with you on individual focal topics such as experimenting with wood. Topics such as construction economics as well as construction and contract law round off the range of courses. In addition to imparting specialist knowledge, the Bachelor's degree programme promotes your social skills, primarily the ability to communicate and work cooperatively in a team, which is important for professional practice.
As a student of the Faculty of Interior Architecture, Architecture and Design IAD, you benefit from a wide-ranging, international network from the fields of timber construction, the construction industry and design. Many complete a semester abroad at one of the numerous renowned partner universities or a study semester with in-depth practice in an international company.
The Bachelor's thesis in the 8th semester completes the degree programme and qualifies you for admission to a Master's programme if you have achieved the appropriate level of performance.
The Bachelor's degree programme in Architecture is internationally accredited by ASIIN e.V.
Career Opportunities
As a graduate of the Bachelor's degree programme in Architecture, you currently have excellent career prospects at both national and international level. The permanent development of the building and timber industry leads to a continuously very high demand for qualified personnel.
With their competences from our holistic architectural education, our graduates will be able to meet the professional challenges as architects both domestically and internationally.
Successful completion of the degree programme enables registration with all state chambers of architects with unrestricted authorisation to submit building documents after subsequent two years of professional practice.
