Here you will find answers to the most frequently asked questions that come up when preparing for a semester abroad.
Things to know in advance
The earlier, the better. You should start looking into exchange opportunities at least a year before you want to go abroad. Here you can find a checklist that will make your planning easier.
In our experience, the 5th or 6th semester is the best time to go abroad. You can also choose a different time - e.g. in direct consultation with your faculty's departmental coordinator.
ERASMUS+ is a funding programme of the European Union for students who study abroad for one to two semesters at an ERASMUS+ partner university. ERASMUS+ is the world's largest mobility programme. You can find more information here.
Yes, of course! You can also organise your studies abroad yourself. You then apply as a freemover at a university of your choice. Then the planning is completely up to you. The International Office will help you with questions about financing.
In individual cases, it is possible to study at a partner university of another faculty, provided that the places have not been allocated to their students. Please contact the International Office for this.
The International Office advises you on exchange opportunities, the organisation and the process of the semester abroad. You will receive information on financing options and the application process and find out which documents have to be submitted when.
For study-related questions, please contact the departmental coordinators of your faculty. They will provide you with information on how your studies abroad can be credited.
If you have questions about living and studying abroad, former exchange students are available as references. In the International Blog, you can find reports about their experiences, often with a contact listed.
Financing the stay abroad
In addition to ERASMUS+ funding, the following opportunities exist:
PROMOS funds and the Bavarian Scholarships are announced in spring. Information is available in advance on the university dashboard and in the financing section. PROMOS funds, like the Bavarian scholarships, are only awarded to mobile students outside the ERASMUS+ area.
You can receive ERASMUS+ funding for stays abroad for a total of up to two semesters per study cycle - i.e. up to twelve months in the first study cycle (i.e. Bachelor's degree) and a further twelve months in the second study cycle (i.e. Master's degree).
It is also possible to apply for a scholarship to study at a partner university worldwide.
We can't give a general answer to that. There are universities in Europe with tuition fees, but also partner universities worldwide without tuition fees. Please contact the host university directly for more information.
PROMOS funds and the Bavarian Scholarships are announced in spring. Information is available in advance on the university dashboard and in the financing section. PROMOS funds, like the Bavarian scholarships, are only awarded to mobile students outside the ERASMUS+ area.
If you register here as a freemover, the International Office will inform you about current scholarship offers (e.g. PROMOS / Bavarian Scholarships). This way, you are guaranteed not to miss out on anything - even if you are already abroad.
This programme supports students' worldwide study abroad, practical and language stays through partial scholarships, travel fees and course fees. The stays can last between one and six months. Stays at ERASMUS+ partner universities are not funded through PROMOS.
Application
Application deadlines for studying abroad at partner universities:
By 1 February each year for the following winter semester.
By 1 July for the following summer semester.
Applications are always submitted via Mobility Online. Further information on studying abroad can be found here.
Yes, please inform the International Office about your priorities. Information on studying with ERASMUS+ can be found here.
After you have opened your applicant account in Mobility Online, please upload the following documents:
The printed and signed applicant form, which is generated via Mobility Online after a successful application.
English language certificate, e.g. DAAD language certificate (can be issued by the Language Centre)
After the application deadline (1 February for the following winter semester, 1 July for the following summer semester), the selection process starts. You can expect a final acceptance/rejection from TH Rosenheim in March/April or September/October.
In addition, you must then submit your application documents to the partner university abroad (note the respective deadline!). The partner university will then confirm your semester abroad, e.g. with a letter of acceptance.
Very likely, as you can specify up to three partner universities in your application. If it doesn't work out with your first choice, the second or third priority may come into play.
No. If you are offered a place, you can also decline it. Once you have been bindingly nominated by the International Office at the partner university, you can only withdraw from the programme in writing, stating important reasons.
Before the start of the semester abroad
In other European countries, the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) provides you with good basic protection. This means that in an emergency you are entitled to the medically necessary benefits for the duration of your stay, but only to the same extent as for people with statutory health insurance in the destination country. More information is available here or directly from your health insurance provider.
For non-European countries, we recommend that you take out additional private health insurance. The DAAD insurance office or your health insurance company can provide you with information on this.
After the allocation of places, all applicants will be informed by the International Office. As soon as you have accepted your place, you will be bindingly nominated at the partner university. Afterwards, you will receive important information from your host university about your study abroad, e.g. about the required application documents, the courses offered and the accommodation options. You should inform yourself about the required application documents on the homepage of your host university and keep the deadlines (see info sheets). This diagram shows the timeline for your semester abroad, starting with the application.
Yes, you will remain enrolled at TH Rosenheim during your studies abroad and will be enrolled at the foreign partner university at the same time - regardless of whether you take a leave of absence or not.
Please remember to re-register at TH Rosenheim for the semester in which you go abroad and for the following semester!
You don't have to, but you can. You can apply for a semester off at the Student Administration during the re-registration period. Please submit a confirmation of admission from the host university and, after your return, a certificate confirming the actual duration of your stay. Please note the regulations regarding semesters off. Further information can be found here.
You cannot take examinations at the TH Rosenheim during a semester of leave (exception: retake examinations).
Attention: The deadlines for taking repeat exams are not interrupted by a leave of absence due to a semester abroad. If you have any questions, please contact the Examination Office.
You don't have to, but you can find out about financing opportunities from us or register here as a freemover. The International Office will then inform you about current scholarship offers (e.g. PROMOS or Bavarian Scholarships). This way you won't miss out on anything - even if you are already abroad.
You can find basic information in the info sheet, and more detailed information directly on the homepage of the host university.
At the end of the semester abroad
The overview of grades or the transcript of records of your academic performances abroad.
Generally, the certificates are sent directly to the students by the partner universities. If the certificate is received by the International Office, it will automatically be forwarded to you. Please make sure to keep your contact address up to date.
Afterwards, please upload a scan of the transcript in Mobility Online. The original is intended for you or for the crediting of your academic work.
In order to receive the ERASMUS+ grant, you must prove that you have successfully completed at least one course.
Outside of ERASMUS+, this means that you will need longer for your studies due to the loss of time.
If you end your stay abroad prematurely for important reasons, you are obliged to inform the International Office of TH Rosenheim immediately in writing, stating the specific reasons. The ERASMUS+ mobility grant must then be repaid in full or in part.
The situation is different in the case of force majeure. In any case, this is a case-by-case decision.
Your experience report will help other interested students in their preparation. Therefore, please make your experience available on the International Blog. Please upload your report together with the declaration of consent for publication - until four weeks after the end of your stay abroad - in Mobility Online. The International Office will then publish your report on the blog.
Publication is not obligatory, but submitting the report is. The templates for the field report and the declaration of consent are available for download in Mobility Online. ERASMUS+ grantees must also participate in the EU Survey.
Credit transfer from studies abroad
Not necessarily. The examination board of your degree programme at your faculty is responsible for recognising your academic achievements abroad. Each application is reviewed individually. Please coordinate your choice of subjects at the host university in good time before you start your studies abroad with the responsible departmental coordinator of the faculty and, if applicable, with the responsible module coordinators.
You can find additional information on the preliminary application for recognition of competences here and on the pages of the Examination Office.
Your academic achievements abroad can be credited upon request after your return. Please submit an "Application for recognising skills" to the Examinations Office. The Examination Office will answer any further questions.
Upon request, these achievements are shown in an extra certificate (as electives). Please submit an "Application for recognising skills" to the Examinations Office. The Examination Office will answer any further questions.
